About Fabrics

At Ecolett we seek to build the best products that cause no harm to the planet.  We work hard to source the best materials and use the proper processes to make our product. We work with the best materials available. Green technology is still evolving and we realize our efforts are far from being perfect, but we try and make headway. We currently use the following environmentally friendly fibers organic cotton, hemp and Tencel (Lyocell).

Learn more about:

Organic cotton

"Organic cotton" implies that the cotton grew on a field where no harmful chemicals were used for years. Growing organically takes more time, requires more knowledge and skills. Organic is beneficial to the environment, to farmers, their families, and their communities.

Here are some quick points/notes for why organic cotton is better than conventional cotton:

  • It takes about one pound of chemicals to grow three pounds of conventional cotton - organic cotton takes none.
  • Most organic cotton producers also use and advocate the most energy efficient, chemical free, environmentally friendly manufacturing processes.
  • Organic cotton clothing wears better (lasts longer) than conventional cotton and is often more breathable than some "high-tech" synthetic materials.
  • Organic cotton clothing typically costs a bit more than non-organic cotton clothing, but the price is worth it.

Organic cotton is currently been produced in many countries; the largest producers being Turkey, India and China.

Hemp

Humans have been using Hemp for 6,000 years. One of the most, durable natural fibers on the planet. Unfortunately, industrial hemp is illegal to grow in most parts of the world. We are currently using our Hemp from China.

Environmental Benefits:

  • Requires no irrigation
  • Uses no pesticides or fertilizers
  • Harvested and processed by hand

Tencel

Tencel (a branded name of Lyocell fiber) is the first new fiber in 30 years, and is made of wood pulp of cellulose. Tencel is also a regenerated cellulose fiber and processed with a non-toxic spinning solvent a closed-loop system. Tencel feels like silk, and drapes luxuriously. It has natural cooling and outstanding moisture management.

Environmental Benefits:

  • Derived from fast-growing trees farmed sustainably
  • No toxic chemicals or solvents used to process fibers
  • Chemicals and solvents are recovered and reused

Bamboo becomes rayon

Bamboo is the fastest growing wooden plant in the world; capable of growing up to four feet a day. Bamboo requires NO fertilizer, pesticides or chemicals to grow. The growing of bamboo is considered sustainable. While bamboo fabrics have become increasingly popular, bamboo pulp-made fabric (also known as bamboo viscose) has been facing controversy with questions raised about its production methods, which are similar to wood pulp rayon’s. Concerns have been raised about the safety of the chemicals used in bamboo viscose making and the pollution that may result from their use.

We’ve been sourcing suppliers to produce Bamboo fabrics in an ecologically responsible manner with minimal environmental impact.
